Preparation Activities – Youth Exchange
Digital Storytelling for Social Change (DiGiSC)
As part of the preparation for the DiGiSC Youth Exchange, the team from Cyprus explored the social realities that shape everyday life in their communities. Through research, discussions, and creative activities, participants reflected on important challenges and shared their own perspectives and experiences.
The research highlighted several key social issues in Cyprus, including unemployment, economic inequality, discrimination, and environmental concerns. While the country has developed in many ways, many people—especially young people, migrants, and vulnerable groups—still face difficulties such as limited job opportunities, unequal access to education, and social exclusion . Participants also explored challenges faced by people with disabilities, refugees, and low-income communities, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities for all .
At the same time, the team focused on positive change and existing initiatives. In Cyprus, many organizations actively support people in need by providing legal aid, social support, education, and community programs. These initiatives play an important role in promoting human rights, equality, and social cohesion
Cyprus, although a relatively developed country, continues to face several social challenges that affect people's everyday lives. The most significant issues include unemployment, economic inequality, discrimination, education gaps, and environmental problems.
Unemployment and Youth Challenges
Unemployment in Cyprus has improved in recent years, with rates around 4–5% in 2025. However, this still represents more than 20,000 people without jobs. Young people are particularly affected, as many struggle to find stable and well-paid employment. Temporary contracts and limited opportunities in certain sectors often lead to job insecurity and, in some cases, young people leaving the country in search of better prospects.
Economic Inequality
Economic inequality is another major concern. The gap between higher- and lower-income groups continues to grow. Around 40% of workers have experienced a decrease in real wages since 2021, while only a smaller percentage have seen salary increases above inflation. As a result, many people find it increasingly difficult to afford basic needs such as housing, food, and daily expenses.
Discrimination and Social Exclusion
Discrimination and social exclusion remain challenges for several groups in Cyprus. Migrants, refugees, and foreign workers may face unfair treatment, lower wages, and difficult working conditions. Stereotypes, prejudice, and racism can also occur in schools, workplaces, and everyday life, limiting equal opportunities and social integration.
Migrants, Refugees, and Vulnerable Groups
Many migrants and refugees experience difficulties such as limited access to employment, low wages, housing problems, and language barriers that make integration more difficult. In addition, asylum procedures can take a long time, creating uncertainty and stress.
People with disabilities also face barriers, including limited accessibility in buildings, fewer job opportunities, and reduced participation in social life, which can affect their independence and quality of life.
Education and Skills
Although Cyprus has a strong education system, challenges still exist. Children from migrant backgrounds may struggle with language and adaptation, while there is also a mismatch between education and labor market needs. This makes it harder for some individuals to find suitable employment and for employers to find qualified workers.
Environmental Issues
Environmental challenges are increasingly important in Cyprus. Issues such as water scarcity, drought, waste management problems, illegal dumping, and pollution affect both urban and rural areas. These problems not only harm the environment but also reduce the quality of life for local communities.
Positive Initiatives and Community Support
Despite these challenges, Cyprus has many organizations and initiatives that work to support people in need. Organizations such as the Cyprus Refugee Council, Caritas Cyprus, Hope For Children CRC Policy Center, and Future Worlds Center provide legal assistance, social support, food aid, and community programs. Their work promotes equality, human rights, and social inclusion, helping to build a more supportive and connected society.
Overall, Cyprus faces important social challenges that require continuous attention and action. While progress has been made, further efforts are needed to improve living conditions, reduce inequality, and ensure equal opportunities for everyone. At the same time, the presence of active organizations and engaged communities shows that positive change is possible.
